Speakers

Freddie Alexander

Freddie Alexander lives in Dublin with his wife, his son and, he suspects, a large family of mice. Freddie rarely eats spice bags these days, although the same assurances cannot be given for the mice who come and go as they please. Mr Spicebag is his first book.

Paul Coomey

Paul Coomey was born in Cork, where his mother taught him to read in 1982. When he was small, his favourite books to borrow from the library were Asterix comics. He wrote his first stories at Kilmurry National School and now he loves to visit schools everywhere and work with children to create heroes and villains and all sorts of other fun stuff. When he isn’t writing stories and drawing pictures, Paul works as an Art Director in Children’s Publishing. He lives in London and in his spare time his favourite things to do are read comics and go to the sea. Stick Boy is Paul’s first book.

Helen O'Higgins

Helen O'Higgins is an artist and illustrator from Dublin. She studied printmaking — with a particular interest in etching — in the National College of Art and Design and is a member of the Black Church Print Studio in Temple Bar. She works in a wide variety of media, both analogue and in recent years, digital. Mr Spicebag is the first book she has illustrated.

Dara McAnulty

Dara McAnulty is a naturalist, conservationist and activist from Northern Ireland. He's received many awards for his conservation work, including from BBC Springwatch, The Daily Mirror and Birdwatch magazine. He's written and presented numerous natural history programmes for BBC radio and television, and has recently become an ambassador for the RSPCA, the iWill campaign and the Jane Goodall Institute. Dara is the youngest ever recipient of the RSPB medal for conservation. He lives with his family and Rosie the rescue greyhound at the foot of the Mourne Mountains in County Down. His first book Diary of a Young Naturalist won the 2020 Wainwright Prize for Nature Writing. His latest book is Wild Child: A Journey Through Nature, illustrated by Barry Fields.

Mr Spicebag

Be warned, Reader, this book isn’t about a normal spice bag, nor is it about a normal boy. Quite the opposite. This book is about the Spice Bag, and our unlikely hero: a 10-year-old boy named George?

And my favourite #picturebook this year is the amazing #BeWildLittleOne by Irish author @Hopewrites and illuminated by the marvellous art of @DanielEgneus. It's a definite #IrishBooks recommendation for #BookElves2022. A perfect gift for little readers - and not-so-little ones! https://t.co/1zjERJ3FRO
