Celebrating Irish Children’s Books | Online School and Family Book Festival. This year we are part of the Dublin Book Festival.

PROGRAMME SCHEDULE

Supported by the Arts Council of Ireland - Literature

12pm | Meet the Leaflings with Niamh Sharkey and Owen Churcher

November 20, 2021 12:00 pm
Cost: €5 per family
Until 12:45 pm
AGE 4+

What is a Leafling?

Among the branches and roots of some of our planet’s most important inhabitants live the Leaflings, the guardians of the trees. In this interactive online workshop you can meet amazing trees from all over the world and the Leaflings who live in them.

Get a sneaky behind the scenes look at how Niamh and Owen made their new book, Meet the Leaflings. Find out where they get their ideas. Peek inside Niamh’s sketch books, and see how Niamh and Owen made their book together.

Then:

Imagine and design a Leafling who might call a nearby tree home. Niamh will lead a step-by-step drawing workshop in which she’ll show you how to create a Leafling of your own. What tree does your Leafling live in? Is it possible to tell just by looking at them?

And:

Get tips on keeping a nature journal or creating your own field guide! Make a leaf rubbing; collect leaves, flowers & seeds; draw trees and learn their names. Design the Leaflings that protect the trees around you.

A live, interactive event, delivered online.

A Field Guide to Leaflings

Welcome to the world of Leaflings, the secret guardians of the trees. Among the branches and roots of some of our planet's most important inhabitants, live the leaflings. These tiny creatures protect trees and help manage their interactions, their cycles and tell their stories. In A Field Guide to Leaflings, meet leaflings from all over the world and the trees they live with. Travel from an ancient holly tree in Ireland, to a cherry blossom in Japan, and climb to the highest branches of a giant redwood in California. The leaflings will show you how trees breathe, make food, support many forms of life and what they mean to people all around the world.

And my favourite #picturebook this year is the amazing #BeWildLittleOne by Irish author @Hopewrites and illuminated by the marvellous art of @DanielEgneus. It's a definite #IrishBooks recommendation for #BookElves2022. A perfect gift for little readers - and not-so-little ones! https://t.co/1zjERJ3FRO
